Influenza A(H1N1) or Swine Flu
Influenza A(H1N1) also known as Swine Flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease that usually affects pigs. It is caused by type A influenza virus. There are four main influenza type A virus subtypes that have been isolated in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2, AND H3N1. The current strain is a new variation of an H1N1 virus, which is a mix of human and animal versions. Like all influenza viruses, swine flu viruses mutate constantly. When the flu spreads from person to person, the virus continues to mutate, making it harder to treat or fight off because of the lack of natural immunity.
Most commonly, swine flu infections in humans occur with people that have direct exposure to pigs. Human to human transmission has been documented but is often limited to close contacts, and is believed to occur through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the swine flu virus.
The symptoms of swine flu in humans are similar to those of the common flu. They include fever, lethargy (tiredness), loss of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Swine flu is treatable with Tamiflu and Relenza.
